During the severe floods experienced during the first quarter of 2000 in the Limpopo Province, extensive damage was caused to the road infrastructure in the province.

The primary objective of the project was to carry out repairs to flood damaged roads in some of the remote rural areas in the northern parts of the Limpopo Province.

The work at the Sane site, on Road D3684, consisted of the reconstruction of one of the wing walls of a bridge, the approaches to the bridge as well as a 400m section of gravel road. It also included the construction of the fill over a 900mm diameter culvert and a reinforced concrete drift structure within the village.

The work on Road D3695 consisted of the repairs to a culvert as well as the rehabilitation of a landslide, which occurred along the road close to Tshixwadza, a rural village high up in the mountains. Road D3695 is the only link to business centers such as Makhado in the former Venda as well as Louis Trichardt (Makhado) for most of the villages situated in the area.

The expertise of the Geotechnical division of Messrs ARQ Specialist Consulting Engineers, were called upon to assist with the designs of the enviro-wall retaining walls used on the project to ensure the stability of the cut and fill slopes at the landslide site.

Project Steering Committees were established and Community Liaison Officers appointed at each of the sites to assist with labour related issues.

The tender documents for the project were based on the Targeted Procurement policy of the National Government to ensure the maximization of the labour content as well as the involvement of Affirmable Business Enterprises (ABE's) on the project. All prescribed targets relating to the use of labour and ABE's were met during the construction period.
